Kökako

Maori bird lore tells us rich and exciting stories about kökako whose lineage is traced back to a supernatural being named Hine Wairua kökako.

It was the kökako that gave Maui water as he fought the sun. The kökako filled its wattles with water and brought it to Maui. His thirst quenched, Maui rewarded the kökako by making its legs long and slender, enabling the bird to bound through the forest with ease in search of food

An interesting fact I have found out about the Kokako is that the North Island Kokako has blue gills and the South Island has yellow or orange gills.

The Kokako belongs to a grop called Wattlebirds incloding the Saddleback and the extinct Huia
